Updated Jan 15, 2015 at 7:20 PMADELANTO — Adelanto councilman Jermaine Wright Sr. was named the city’s Mayor Pro Tem this week in a 5-0 vote by the City Council.
Mayor Rich Kerr nominated Wright and the motion was seconded by former Adelanto Mayor Charley Glasper.
The action means Wright will sit in as mayor at events and functions that the mayor himself is unable to attend. Wright will also be Kerr’s alternate for several county and city committees he was appointed to, including San Bernardino Associated Governments; Southern California Association of Governments; and the Victor Valley Economic Development Authority.
Wright was also named the city representative on the Victor Valley Transit Authority board and League of California Cities Desert Mountain Division.
Wright, who lost to Kerr in November’s mayoral race, expressed support for his former rival.
“I just want to make sure that the citizens of our city are aware: It’s a new day in our city,” Wright said in his closing comments. “We have a mayor here that’s out there on a daily basis doing some things. I run into meetings and have been told I’m a day late and a dollar short because Rich has already been there — which is not a bad thing for me. It’s just awesome to see what’s happening in our city.”
Wright also declared that the city was “moving forward” and said he hoped it would become the “gem of the High Desert.”
“We’re going to forget what happened in the past and forget what’s been going on,” Wright said. “With y’all’s help Adelanto will be the best city here in the High Desert. Just please support us. We will support you.”
The newly elected mayor and council members were also tasked with appointing planning commissioners. All three selected men who are currently serving on the five-member body. Kerr recommended Chris Waggener, Glasper recommended Jessie Flores, and John “Bug” Woodard selected Ricky Rubalcava.
In his comments Kerr applauded outgoing Mayor Cari Thomas and former councilman Charles Valvo for attending the meeting on Wednesday and lending support.
