Coliform bacteria in Adelanto Water: City in violation of state law monitoring requirements

ADELANTO – The City of Adelanto, as required by law informed water customers that they did not meet the monitoring requirements, monitoring the presence of Coliform in the months of November and December of 2016. The City is in violation of the regulations, which had/has the potential to risk public safety.
According to the written notice, in November, there was a Total Coliform (TC) positive lab result. As required by law, repeat samples were taken, although two of the required sites were not tested; one being upstream and one being downstream from the original sample location. The repeat samples, where taken returned with negative results.
Again in December 2016, TC positive lab results came in. Repeat samples again were taken, but three were not tested. These three included upstream and downstream from the original sample site and the source wells. The original sample site retested with negative results.

State law requires that drinking water is tested for specified contaminants on a regular basis. Certain health standards are set to ensure the safety of those drinking the water. During November and December of 2016, it is unclear if the quality of the water met these standards due to the fact that not all necessary tests were completed.
Those who live in the area do not need to do anything at this time. If you feel that you have had health issues that may have resulted from possible contamination you should consult your physician.
City of Adelanto officials said that there is no evidence to lead them to believe that there was or is any risk to public health.

Coliform bacteria is a rod-shaped bacteria often associated with human or animal fecal matter. Tests are a commonly used indicator of sanitary quality of foods and water. Potential health effects of elevated levels of Coliform may include gastroenteric infections and diseases. Symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach cramps.
