The first project is a 112,510-square-foot shopping center on 12 acres on the south side of Mojave Drive, between Koala Road and Dunes Drive. It will consist of retail, office, and restaurant businesses, as well as a gas station. The second project is a 142,928-square-foot shopping center on 20 acres on the north side of Mojave Drive, 640 feet west of Bellflower Street. It also includes office, retail and restaurant space.
Neither project received any opposition from residents at either the county Planning Commission or Board of Supervisors levels.
The Adelanto Public Utility Authority will provide water and sewer service for both developments.
For years, the city has struggled to stay afloat financially and last year pushed for a utility users tax to stave off a potential Chapter 9 bankruptcy filing due to a lack of sales tax and other revenues.
In November, residents showed up at a City Council meeting in droves to oppose two private prisons, which the council approved. Residents said the city needed to focus on more creative ways of attracting new business to the city, and not rely on prisons as the city’s failsafe revenue generator.
Although both developments are within the city’s sphere of influence, the question remained Tuesday on Adelanto’s plan to annex the land where the shopping centers will be built.
Adelanto’s interim city manager, Thomas Thornton, did not return telephone calls and an e-mail Tuesday seeking comment.
