ADELANTO — Adelanto Elementary School District Chief of Personnel Steve Desist has announced his retirement effective Aug. 1, according to agenda documents.
Desist did not respond for requests for comment on his retirement. His contract in AESD was worth $166,554 per year with an additional monthly car allowance of $475, according to district records.
Much of his tenure has been marred by an ongoing labor battle between the Adelanto Teachers Association, which sought salary and benefits increases. The teachers were without a new contract for more than a year, but the district announced a tentative agreement between the two sides on Friday that was set to go to union membership in about a week, according to ADTA President Hector Anderson.
"We'll miss him," said AESD Board President Elaine Gonzales. "I'm sorry to see him go. He did a good job with us. He's a nice guy and I know he's taken a pounding with all of the different things going on right now. I understand he has plans for some fun stuff and he's looking forward to it. I wish him well, I really do. I hope he enjoys his retirement."

Desist first started in AESD on Oct 10, 2013 and his contract was set to go until June 30, 2016. He had previously worked as Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources for Victor Valley Union High School District.
